hello I'm Dan Vaughan-price and this is my first podcast for media level so don't blame me if its a bit crap i just came out of out of the cinema watching the new film bolt it wasn't a bad film actually so i was wondering how did it get there so i will take you back in time to where this film once came from as this is all about distribution sorry but Someone has to do it.

stinger
162m people went to the cinema last year that's 3.1m a week that means that you will go to the cinema twice in a year sad git
IT
stinger

so what is film distribution
distributor are the gears that makes the film world go round these are the people who gets the film to the exhibitors which is the cinemas. and then the wide audience us without distributes the films would still sit in the studio and we wont have anything to waste our money on
all starts of with a master print which gets licensed to the distributor who will seek certification from the bbfc who will give it a certificate of age to put on the film this then will trigger a plan that will extend for the next 1 to 2 years these are the plans are built with experience and its done in great detail and research.even before that theres all the marketing as you no Ive just come out of the cinema as soon as i stood in the foyer i was dazzled by the amount of posters around me the were even showing trailers on a big and i mean colossal plasma screen

stinger

did you now that the average group of people go to the cinema is 3 and the average age is 15 to 24 also

stinger

that's not all the distributors will also organise film festivals making posters billboards bombarding us with adverts on the TV Internet magazines also cause we live in a world of gadgets we get adverts on our ipods this is to create a buzz with the audience this is to get a foothold and build a base on witch to launch a film.also the distributors will use merchandising this will include toys t shirts even beer mats to make sure you Cannot escape the media storm. another popular way for game creators to use the film to launch a game on x box or other game consoles.

stinger
\so take a film like Bolt, it is animated by Disney and then distributed by ironically walt disney pictures

stinger
did you know that this is called 'vertical integration' it means that a company will handle all or most of the separate parts
stinger

take it way back to the drawing board when the idea was thought up the distributors will think up a marketing plan this will be done with experience and in great detail this plan will make them get to know there audience who will spend there money to watch the film also they will gather information on which type of audience the film is best suited to so they will spilt the audience in to categories this will include age, class, income etc after they have worked out there main target audience they will devise a marketing campaign to get people interested they will use third party sponsorship so a film like bolt which is aimed at families the distributors will look at companies like mc Donald's where allot of families go and they will do special deals and offers so if you buy lets say a happy meal the meal will include a free toy probably a character from the film also the distributors will aim to launch the film in the school holiday seasons to get the most viewers after this thy will use the internet and websites to post trailers from the film posted or on the t v ,after assaulting our eyes with the visual feast the set upon the ears the distributors will use the radio this will get to people in cars and in homes but nothing is more powerful than word of mouth this will spread like head lice in a couple of weeks 10s of millions of people will know about the film after the advertisment feast the distributor will get a copy of the film and use a test audience these will incude critics these could make or break a film if the critics give a bad review it could be difficult for the producers to win the audance back also the will need to go to the bbfc for certification in this case bolt was classified as u after that masterprints will be issuded to the exibutors wich are the cinima chains like cineworld imax odien and empire then that is shown to the audience that pay good money to go and see these films. the film will stay in the cinema for about 8 weeks after all that the masterprints are all put onto digital format and the prints are destroyed and the digital formats are put onto dvd games and mostly posted on u-tube.

stinger
did you no that london makes up 25% of the countries viewing and there are 650 cinemas in the UK with 3600 screens
stinger
